A variety of immunizations are available through Clinical Services at University Health Services. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the immunizations offered.

Flu (Influenza) Vaccine
Seasonal flu vaccine is expected to arrive the last week of September. A vaccine for H1N1 is in development and is expected later this fall. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

New HPV Vaccine - Gardasil - Available at UHS
Women students can get a new vaccine for prevention of cervical cancer this fall at UHS. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Gardasil, which is highly effective against four types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), including two that cause most cervical cancers. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the U.S., with more than 20 million men and women currently infected and 6.2 million new infections each year. HPV is most common in men and women in their late teens and early twenties. See HPV under Common Health Topics for more information about this disease, and HPV Vaccine for details about the vaccine itself, including recommendations from the FDA.

Immunizations are available at UHS by making an appointment online or by calling 863-0774. UHS recommends that students find out ahead of time if their insurance provider will cover all or part of the cost. Three injections are needed. Students may elect to pay the charges at the time of the visit or have the charges added to their student accounts.

Meningococcal (Bacterial) Meningitis Immunization
Pennsylvania state law requires all students living in University-owned housing must complete the Meningococcal Vaccine Certification form. For more information about the meningitis vaccine requirement, visit the Penn State Housing Web site.

Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) (also called Menactra) works well and protects about 90% of those who get it. It can prevent 4 types of meningococcal disease, including 2 of the 3 types most common in the U.S. Menactra cannot prevent all types of the disease, but it does protect many people who might become sick if they didn't get the vaccine. To learn more about the disease itself, see Meningococcal Meningitis.

Make your appointment online or call 814-863-0774. At UHS Clinical Services in the Student Health Center, the cost may be paid by cash, check, MasterCard or VISA, or by charging it to a student account.
