EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
General Information
As a UHS service to students, faculty and staff, and visitors to University Park campus, the University
Ambulance Service (UAS) provides emergency care on campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year
except during the winter break.
If you are on campus and experience a serious or life-threatening medical emergency, dial 911.
The closest medical center is Mount
Nittany Medical Center, a 200 bed acute care facility with 176
physicians in 42 specialties, located 2 miles from campus on Park
Avenue. Please note: all hospital emergency room and inpatient fees
are the patient's responsibility.
University Ambulance Service is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department
of Health and is staffed by a well trained and experienced emergency
staff. UAS employs a full time Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Manager, an Instructor/EMS Supervisor, an EMS Supervisor, approximately
30 students as part-time Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), additional
EMTs and EMT-Ps for special events, and approximately 12 to 20 volunteer
EMTs in the training program. The service provides Advanced Life
Support level services at special events under medical command of
an emergency physician from the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. EMS also
provides numerous training programs for students interested in becoming
EMTs.
This service and responds to approximately 1000 ambulance calls per year on the University Park campus. UAS
responds to any calls dispatched for medical emergencies on campus or to assist other EMS agencies off campus.
Though students are our main customers, we routinely respond to requests from employees, visitors, and event
and conference attendees.

Cost
There is a charge for ambulance services. If you are a Penn State student, for your convenience, University
Health Services automatically bills this amount to your student account. A copy of the statement will be mailed
to you at your local address. You may want to submit this statement to your personal insurance company for
possible reimbursement.

Special Events
If you or your club/organization are sponsoring a special event at a University venue, you need to comply with
the Penn State administrative guidelines regarding emergency services. Click on the following link to review

Automated External Defibrillators (AED)
Any University department or administrative unit planning to purchase, use, or maintain an
Automated External Defibrillators (AED) must submit a "Plan to Use An AED" to the Office
of Emergency Services.
