CAPS provides group and individual counseling,
crisis intervention, and psychological and psychiatric evaluations
for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as prevention and
consultation services for the University community. (more about Services)
CAPS services can help students resolve personal
concerns that may interfere with their academic progress, social
development, and satisfaction at Penn State. Some of the more common
concerns include difficulty with friends, roommates, or family members;
depression and anxiety; sexual identity; lack of motivation or difficulty
relaxing, concentrating or studying; eating disorders; sexual assault
and sexual abuse recovery; and uncertainties about personal values
and beliefs.
CAPS is located on the fifth floor of the Student Health Center. Our professional staff includes psychologists, psychiatric
providers, social workers and graduate trainees. In addition, CAPS
employs counselors with specialties in the treatment of sexual assault
survivors and addictions.(more about our Staff)
The staff at CAPS welcomes all students and embraces a philosophy respectful of diversity. We are supportive of clients' gender, race, sexual orientation, cultural and religious backgrounds, and abilities. We are committed to helping all students deal with discrimination and identity issues.
Basic CAPS services are provided at no charge to undergraduate and graduate students registered full time (12 credits or more for undergraduates, 6 credits or more for graduates) for the semester in which they were interested in seeking our services. Selected services, including initial appointments and group therapy, are available to part-time students free of charge. There is a limit to the number of individual counseling sessions for any student in any given year. Fees for certain specialty services may be assessed.
