Students In Distress Workshop

Students In Distress: Guidelines for Faculty and Staff Interventions is offered as an educational program to assist the Penn State campus community to identify the needs of students experiencing emotional distress or academic difficulties due to psychological or behavioral problems. The goal of the workshop is to help faculty and staff recognize students in distress and make appropriate referrals for assistance to The Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) or other campus and community resources.

Students in Distress is offered as a 3 hour workshop by staff from the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The workshop is presented each semester through the Office of Human Resources (HRDC) as a live presentation and those interested in participating can register on line at http://www.ohr.psu.edu. It’s also available to faculty and staff groups at the University Park campus by special arrangement with the CAPS outreach coordinator.

In addition, each of the Penn State campuses has their own video of the workshop for use by presenters at the campuses. However, when a live presentation can't be scheduled due to time, distance, or circumstance, this on-line version of the workshop can provide you with most of the content of the workshop and help answer some of your immediate questions about how to proceed to help students you are concerned about.

This online version can also be used as a preview of the workshop so you can see if scheduling a live presentation would be beneficial for your unit, or it can provide you with information as a "refresher," if you've attended the workshop in the past. It includes dramatic role play scenes that can help you visualize the kinds of situations you may find yourself in as you come into contact with students in your work.
