When you hear United Way, you often think of corporate donations and yearly pledges by company employees.
When Penn State Student Affairs hears United Way, they think of Penny Wars, Dress Down Days, and The Annual Student Affairs Auction/Luncheon.
“We had a wonderful committee of 17 members representing different Student Affairs units. Many of the members have served previously and really know what they are doing. The committee is so enthusiastic and creative,” said Sharon Mortensen, United Way Chair for Student Affairs.
“This is one of the best committees I have worked with. They have a common goal, they enjoy working together, and we have a lot of fun during our meetings. The committee begins meeting in June and continues through early November.”
The three highlights of this year's campaign -- Penny Wars, Dress Down Days and The Annual Student Affairs Auction/Luncheon. – are part of an effort to meet this year's campaign goal of $25,890, which is a three percent increase over last year's figure of $25,136.20.
Penny Wars is simply a competition between Student Affairs buildings to see which would accumulate the most money in its jar and win 17 dozen cookies baked by the United Way Committee. Boucke building won the battle.
“I would have to say Penny Wars was the most creative fundraiser this year. It was also the easiest. All the committee had to do was gather a few jars, label them and incite a bit of competition. This netted us $1,061.99.”
On Dress Down Days, staff have the opportunity to dress down for United Way by donating money.
And, The Annual Student Affairs Auction/Luncheon, which features donated items from area businesses and Student Affairs staff. Local auctioneer Chuck Mong donated his time to auction the items. That effort raised more than $4,000. Also, Tom Bauer from the Penn State Bookstore made a presentation of $5,000.
Next year, Mortensen will give way to the new chair, Peggy Lorah, Director of the Center for Women Students.
