Cultural Development Programs

Culturally based personal development initiatives encourage student leadership, gender, and civic growth as well as an understanding of the critical intersection of culture with each of these areas.

Gender & Ethnicity Series

The PRCC sponsors a cultural program each year that specifically focuses on the intersections of critical personal issues facing under-represented students and communities.  This cultural development program concentrates on exploring the connections between gender identity/experiences, culture, and ethnicity.  In the past, this series has taken on many formats including Gender & Ethnicity Retreats; The Rockview Reading Circle-a prison outreach program to Rockview SCI which focused on the social experiences of men of color; and Setting the Table: Recipes of Resistance-an arts and feminism workshop which leveraged the role that mothers and families play in students lives.

Brotherhood Retreat

The Brotherhood Retreat is a one-day reflective experience for college males that explores the intersection of cultural and gender identities.  The retreat critically examines the institution of manhood and offers an introduction to rites of passage.

Sisterhood Retreat

The goal of the program is to inspire young women to examine how they perceive their own physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness, and to give them the necessary tools to them continue their own growth and development.

I. Own. Cultural Marketplace

The marketplace is designed to serve as an interactive cultural education and development program that highlights the gender experiences of people of color. In particular this program provides an introduction to the historical and contemporary use of men and women of color bodies as social commodities, and the philosophical misappropriation of rights to one’s own body and identity. This initiative is a collaborative effort with the PRCC and the Center for Women Students to provide our campus a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of race and gender identities.
