First Year Experience

Your first year of college is typically a very challenging and exciting time. Penn State realizes that the first year of your collegiate experience is critical in determining your future success.

Residence Life focuses its efforts on aiding those students in their transition to Penn State. Over the course of the year, activities focused on interpersonal relationships, academic connections, career exploration and diversity are presented to help students learn about as many valuable campus resources as possible.

The philosophy of the First Year Experience (FYE) program is based on supporting students to gain valuable life skills that assist them in their transition to the college environment...but are applicable well beyond their first year of college.

First year students are encouraged to consider a special living option environment to support their transition. These environments offer similar out-of-classroom interaction with faculty specifically related to various academic fields of interest. In addition, the presence of upper-class students who share similar academic, intellectual and social interests provides valuable interactions around specific subject areas.
