The Special Living Options program at University Park creates living-learning communities that enhance the formal academic experience of Penn State students through opportunities for creative expression, experiential learning, ethical leadership and service in their living environments.
The mission of the Special Living Options program is to cultivate multi-faceted communities that value individual and collective diversity; enhance student learning through academic partnerships; and support student transition and personal growth while fostering responsible citizenship.
The SLO program encompasses the following types of residential communities....
The First Year Experience provides an environment to increase the connection with staff and faculty. Awareness and an appreciation of differences will be encouraged and celebrated throughout the community. The FYE also develops leaders and responsible citizens who enhance society and the global community along with fostering Pennsylvania State University pride throughout the world.
Academically-focused SLOs seek to facilitate faculty-student interpersonal interaction to enhance the academic and classroom experience of both students and faculty. By providing opportunities for students to engage with faculty outside of the formal classroom setting, students' lives are enriched by an added intellectual and academic tone in their living environments.
Thematic Interest Houses provide students with the opportunity to associate with other students of similar academic, social and political interests. By providing these smaller, intimate residential environments, we assist students in personalizing their educational experience at a large university.
