The RA program is open to full-time undergraduate students who have
at least 12 earned Penn State credits and a 2.40 GPA. The first
step in the process is to attend a required information session,
which is the only way to receive an application.
If accepted into the RA selection program, all potential RAs are
required to take a semester-long, three-credit course, Counselor
Education 302. This "by invitation only" interactive course,
taught by Residence Life professional staff, offers communication
and leadership skill development. Training is also provided in the
days before students return to campus before semesters, and in on-going
supervision.
RAs act as role models and community builders within the residence
hall areas while integrating their roles as University representatives
and student advocates. There are times when RAs must also be disciplinarians,
but mostly the job involves having a genuine concern for others.
Community Assistants and Community Ambassadors (CAs) perform duties
similar to those of RAs, but they work and live with the upperclass
and graduate student populations. In the undergraduate Nittany Apartments,
Nittany Suites, and Eastview Terrace, CAs are selected from highly
qualified experienced RAs. In the graduate and returning adult settings
in White Course and Graduate Circle Apartments, CAs are selected
from graduate students with an appropriate background.
When Residence Life learns of CA vacancies, announcements are made,
usually in late February or early March for the following academic
year. If vacancies exist, application for Nittany and Eastview is
by the RA’s Assistant Director’s recommendation and
letter of interest; if vacancies exist in White Course or Graduate
Circle, application is by cover letter and resume.
