Job Description
Welcome Week leaders are undergraduate student leaders who provide positive peer assistance for new Penn State University Park students during Welcome Week-the time period designated as the first day new students move to campus and extending through the first week of classes. Welcome Week Leaders work closely with staff from the Office of Residence Life and Housing as well as assist with programs coordinated by other partners in Student Affairs and Undergraduate Education through arrival and the first week of classes.  Welcome Week Leaders are interested in working with a diverse population of new students including: first-year, change of assignment, and transfer students. With a great deal of influence on the degree to which new students feel a part of and engaged in the Penn State Community, Welcome Week Leaders play a pivotal role in Penn State’s efforts to shape and enhance the new University Park student experience. 

General Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Attend and actively participate in Welcome Week Training Meeting –1pm - 3pm on Thursday, August 19th
  • Assist with the process of moving new students into the Residence Halls
  • Assist with the coordination and facilitation of Welcome Week events which can include the following:
    • Assist with Welcome Week events in the residence hall areas and across the University as needed
    • Facilitate well-planned and effective campus tours, both general and specific to participants’ class schedules
    • Escort students to Academic Orientation Meetings
  • Motivate new students to attend all Welcome Week events and programs
  • Serve as a resource person to new students and their parents/families
  • Answer the questions of new students and/or families honestly and appropriately or refer students to someone and/or appropriate resource that can answer the question
  • Refrain from taking new students to parties involving alcoholic beverages or illegal substances and/or talking about, promoting or endorsing drinking alcoholic beverages or using illegal substances, even if age 21 or over

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate students at Penn State University Park in good academic standing
  • In good conduct standing with the University (not currently on deferred expulsion)
  • Minimum 2nd semester standing
