Community, Civility, Diversity

Several research projects have investigated the sense of community, civility, and diversity. Undergirding our work are the six principles of Ernest Boyer's "civil community of learning."

Faculty and students were asked how well the campus climate was:
  1. educationally purposeful - where academic goals are shared,
  2. open - where freedom of expression is highly valued,
  3. just - where individuals are respected and diversity is pursued,
  4. disciplined - where obligations to the group are defined and honored,
  5. caring - where each person is supported, and
  6. celebrative - where traditions are remembered
