Student Death

Legal Services

The office of Student & Family Services is a multi-faceted office that strives to provide students with the tools to make difficult situations more manageable.

Emergencies that warrant missing class

Students may experience an emergency, such as the death of a family member, an accident or other circumstance beyond their control that require leaving campus. Student and family services staff can help. The office will notify the student's academic departments informing them that the student is going to miss class and when they are expected to return. THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSED ABSENCE. Arrangements must be made, between the student and faculty member to make up any incomplete work.

Student & Family services needs to be contacted with the student identification number, the reason for missing class and the expected date of return.

Locating a student

If a parent/family member needs to locate a student due to an emergency, staff will try to locate/contact the student. If we are unable to locate the student during a class, by phone, or email, and the student lives on campus, staff will then contact the residence hall coordinator to help locate the student. A similar effort is made when students reside off campus. Assistance may be requested from apartment management and/or local police.
