GENERAL INFORMATION

Each year Penn State selects a student health insurance plan and makes it available to undergraduate and graduate students:

  • who have no health insurance coverage
  • who need supplemental insurance because their current plan does not provide adequate coverage while they are at Penn State
  • who are international students who must comply with Penn State's mandatory insurance requirement

The 2008-2009 Penn State Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan is underwritten and marketed by United Healthcare Student Resources.

NEED FOR HEALTH INSURANCE FOR PENN STATE STUDENTS

Except for our Pharmacy*, University Health Services does not have insurance contracts for direct payment with any health insurance companies for clinic or ancillary services and it does not direct bill any insurance companies.

We regret any inconvenience this policy may cause for students and parents. However, because UHS treats students from all over the United States and the world, there would need to be contracts with hundreds of insurance companies. The costs of dealing with so many insurance providers and processing thousands of insurance claims each year would drive up the current discounted rate for all UHS services.

Therefore, you (the student) are responsible for all charges for clinic visits, medical procedures, and ancillary services including x-rays, lab tests, and physical therapy. You must pay at the time of service by either having the charge billed to your Penn State student account or paying by check, cash, ATM, VISA or MasterCard. However, your billing is available online. You can print out copies of your bill from our secure website.

You should find out if your insurance company will cover your care at Penn State, because there may be restrictions on primary care outside of your insurance company's network. If you find you are not covered by your insurance for care provided at UHS, this is when you should consider purchasing additional coverage, either privately or though the Penn State Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan.

* The only exception is the UHS Pharmacy, which does have some insurance contracts; if you want to know if your insurance provider is listed, see our list of accepted prescription cards.
