EMS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is always looking for certified Pennsylvania Emergency Medical
Technicians (EMTs) to become new volunteers with University Ambulance Service.
New volunteer EMTs are scheduled on either day or night ambulance shifts with experienced crew members for
training and orientation. The orientation program follows the guidelines in our
Trainee Manual. Ambulance shifts are from
1700 to 0700 overnight and 0700 to 1700 during the days. Day shifts can be broken up to accommodate class
schedules. Volunteers may also sign up to work special events such as concerts and sporting events.
If you are not currently certified as a Pennsylvania EMT, there
are many local training opportunities to become certified. Penn
State offers the EMT course (KINES 403) every fall and spring semester
(Course Application). Check
the EMS Continuing Education Page for
Penn State and other local EMS course offerings. For Pennsylvania
reciprocity information, check the
PA Department of Health Pre-hospital Personnel Manual .
Volunteers who have gone through the orientation program may become eligible to apply for regular ambulance and
special events crew positions. These are part-time paid positions with the Office of EMS. Applications are
accepted from EMTs, EMT-Ps, and EMT-HPs who are Penn State students that have completed the University
Ambulance Service volunteer training program, and hold current certifications in CPR, AED, EVOC, and
HAZMAT-Ops.
For more information on becoming a volunteer, check out the Frequently Asked Questions about Becoming an EMS Volunteer, review the volunteer
criteria, and contact the University Ambulance Service volunteer
supervisor: Danielle Tholey .
