DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Health is something we all hope to have and maintain.
One of the most widely accepted definitions of health comes from the World Health Organization, which
says that health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity.” This definition is the philosophy upon which University Health
Services operates.

As a nationally accredited ambulatory health care center, our experienced and caring professionals
provide a wide range of high-quality health services, including acute care, preventive medicine, and
health education, to all Penn State students. Our staff members are specialists in student health. We
understand the academic community and student life, and we are accepting and non-judgmental.
We want students to feel comfortable accessing medical services while away from home. So we encourage
each student to establish a relationship with a health care provider at UHS as they would with their
family practitioner back home.
We work with students to resolve immediate medical problems, but also help them develop strategies to
stay healthy. By promoting individual health, we believe we contribute to a healthier Penn State
community.
On behalf of the UHS staff, I wish you (or if you are a parent, then your son or daughter) a healthy
and happy experience at Penn State. Remember that UHS is your “Penn State Health Connection.” So, be
sure to call us if you are sick or need health care advice!
Sincerely,
Margaret E. Spear, M.D.
