ALCOHOL INTERVENTION PROGRAM, LEVEL 3
AIP3 is a therapeutic intervention with a mandated student and an Addiction Specialist from the Center for
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The Office of Judicial Affairs makes direct referrals to CAPS
because of repeated alcohol-related offenses (or a first-time, serious, usually dangerous consequence of high
risk drinking) indicative of substance abuse on the student's part. AIP3 referrals are often habitual
high-risk (binge) drinkers or alcohol dependent.
The Addiction Specialist performs a clinical evaluation during the first session (intake evaluation). The
student is provided feedback of this evaluation and is given treatment recommendations. A brief counseling
process ensues, focusing on behavior change; co-existing clinical problems (depression, anxiety, etc.) are
also addressed. Personalized education is part of the process, but AIP3 primarily involves confrontation of a
variety of psychological defenses to heighten the student's awareness and build upon motivation for long-term
change.
Cost: $30 per session (typically 1-4 sessions)
Referred students should contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at
863-0395 for more information about AIP3.
