WELCOME TO S-PLAN

We welcome your interest in becoming a S-Plan mentor. S-Plan is a program that focuses on the support, survival, and success of African-American and Latino students new to Penn State. S-Plan is designed to assist new students in their adjustment to campus and to help them manage the stresses that they may experience in their first year here. It is offered through the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness at University Health Services.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN BEING A S-PLAN MENTOR?

Students participating in the program receive independent studies class credit through the African and African American Studies Department for fall and spring semesters (the class is listed as AAAS 496.02). This is a yearlong commitment.

As a S-Plan leader you will participate in weekly Thursday classes and a mandatory retreat at the beginning of the school year. The retreat and classes are designed to enhance your leadership and community development skills from a culturally competent perspective. This will help S-Plan members achieve effective mentoring, programming, and collaboration while developing new leadership skills. As a result, your guidance will empower first-year African American and Latino students to be mentally healthy and successful at Penn State University.

Current S-Plan leaders feel that applicants for leadership positions in S-Plan should be dedicated, responsible, outgoing, caring, creative and open minded.
