CLINIC VOLLUNTEER PROGRAM
Applications
are being accepted from 1/1/08 through 2/11/08.
NOTE: Applications submitted prior to 1/1/08 must be re-submitted for consideration.
The University Health Services Clinic Volunteer Program provides
students with the opportunity to interact professionally with
patients in the
Clinical Services Department.
Clinic
Volunteers work closely with members of the clinical staff and assist
the nurses in a variety of duties. They assist patients and get
a first-hand understanding of the dynamics of the health care system.
Volunteering enhances communication skills with patients and members
of the healthcare team. Students earn three credits total for participating
in the Clinic Volunteer Program.
Training
occurs each fall. All participants in the Clinic Volunteer Program
are trained to conduct an initial intake screening of patients in
a two-credit Bio-Behavioral Health course. This includes assessing
vital signs, determining the reason for the visit, providing health
education on various topics, and performing simple screenings such
as peak flow readings and eye exams. Other topics include common
health concerns, proper documentation and patient confidentiality.
The Clinic Volunteer Program is a two semester commitment (Fall 2008 and Spring 2009). The classroom portion of the program takes place during the fall semester. Volunteers must commit to working in the clinic for one four-hour
block of time each week for a minimum of two semesters. They will
receive one-credit for volunteering for one of the semesters.
You
may fill out the form on-line or pick up a hard copy at the UHS
Information Desk in Ritenour Building. You will hear from us by
May 1st about whether or not you have been selected for an interview.
