INDIVIDUAL PEER HEALTH EDUCATION SERVICE

Interventionist Information

University Health Services is recruiting undergraduate and graduate students for the 2009-2010 academic year. Interventionists participate in a unique volunteer opportunity and have a direct impact on the health of Penn State students. Interventionists receive training and provide one-on-one educational services for alcohol and marijuana infractions.  Interventionists also receive training and conduct individualized  pre- and post-HIV test counseling. Peer interventionists are trained in rapport building,  risk reduction strategies, motivational interviewing and other educational approaches to help students make healthy lifestyle choices.

A few of the benefits of being a peer interventionist include:

  • Make a difference in the health of the Penn State community
  • Gain valuable and unique experience
  • Become certified with the PA Department of Health as an HIV Prevention Counselor to conduct pre- and post-sessions for HIV testing
  • Receive training on educating students one-on-one about alcohol and marijuana risk reduction
  • Learn up-to-date information about current health issues
  • Build friendships
  • Build your resume
  • Opportunities are also available for 3 credits through a BioBehavioral Health Independent Study Course. (Please inquire about this option.)

Requirements:

  • A minimum one year commitment (2009-2010)
  • 2-3 volunteer hours per week conducting  sessions
  • Mandatory attendance at introductory training on
    • Alcohol and marijuana (April 2009)
    • HIV Prevention Counseling through the PA Department of Health
      (August 2009)
  • Mandatory attendance at the Peer Interventionist monthly meeting

Please complete the following application. Submission can be electronically or in hard copy to 201 Student Health Center. At least one recommendation form must be submitted with the application.   


The application deadline is March 6, 2009.
 Decisions will be made by March 26, 2009.
