WHAT IS A HEALTHWORKS WORKSHOP? Peer educators (Penn State students who have received special training in health issues through the UHS Department of Health Promotion and Wellness) facilitate workshops on alcoho and nutrition. Descriptions of the specific topics and programs are listed below. If these workshops do not meet the needs of the person(s) requesting the program, we will try to accommodate the specific request or provide other resources.
Risky Business: This workshop will provoke discussion and self-awareness about alcohol-related behaviors, how alcohol can affect judgment, and how drinking alcohol affects decision-making. Learn more about how alcohol relates to decisions regarding sex choices, how to drink safely, and how to keep others safe. Educators help the audience assess their attitudes about alcohol and sexuality-related issues while separating the facts from myths, learn about Pennsylvania alcohol laws and help students build skills to manage their alcohol intake. Depending on your needs, nutrition educators will plan a workshop to increase participant's awareness of dieting fact, fallacies and dangers commonly believed or practiced among college students. They can discuss signs that may indicate a friend has an eating disorder and how to approach them about it. In addition, they can discuss new government recommendations for combining healthy eating and exercise as a way to enjoy overall good health. The facilitators will also provide resources. Other HealthWorks services available to students through University Health Services include: Computer Dietary Analysis (CDA): Nutrition educators use
the "Nutritionist IV" software to assist students in evaluating
and modifying their diets. The analysis consists of: After the analysis has been completed, you will meet with the nutrition educator to discuss the results. CDA's are provided free of charge on an appointment basis. Appointments can be made Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, by calling (814) 863-0461 or stop by 301 Student Health Center to pick up a "24 hour food record" form. Health Promotion Library: Writing a paper, giving a speech, or just need information on a health-related topic? Located in 201 Student Health Center, the library has books, journals, and other resource materials that may be borrowed.
If you need to cancel a workshop for any reason, please give us as much notice as possible. If HealthWorks needs to cancel a workshop, we will contact you as soon as we are able. We will make every attempt to reschedule the workshop for the next available date.
